Access All Areas

As well as showing films, the BFI Southbank often hosts lectures, Q&As and other movie-related events.

NFT1 has always had a stage in front of it. This year, however, as part of a major technical overhaul, the BFI asked us to design a new one.

It had to be fully accessible for wheelchairs and those with mobility issues. And it had to look good within this prestigious space.

Design Process

We discussed the spec with the client, consultants and accessibility advisors. Plans were produced, re-thought and re-drawn.

Manufacture

As much as possible is pre-fabricated in our workshops so that time on site is kept to a minimum.

Out with the Old

First we removed the original stage, whose structure had been unseen for 50 years.

In with the New

Our pre-fabricated stage structure was then slotted into place. Note we also infilled the floor level.

Plywood Cladding

The stage, ramps and front infill were all then clad in plywood.

Illuminated Nosings

Along the ramps and steps we installed illuminated nosings for maximum safety.

All the Trimmings

We then carpeted the stage, ramps and front tiers. And replaced the front rows of seats.

Stage & Tiers were patient and collaborative. We’re very pleased with the end result.
